How We Help
JLS Middle School
.

"JLS is extremely fortunate to be the beneficiary of PiE funds to support
our extraordinary selection of diverse electives, provide guidance
counselors at each grade level, maximize the technology resources available
to us, and increase our ability to foster the social-emotional development
of our students. PiE funds enrich the lives of our students and help to
instill a love of learning in our community! Thank you!"
— JLS Principal Sharon Ofek
At JLS, generous donations to PiE help create a more caring environment for
kids and help kids find their interests in school. Specifically, during
2012-13, thanks to the support of parents and community members, gifts to
PiE will provide $268,697 to JLS which will be used to support:
-
Additional Electives — PiE dollars makes it possible
for JLS to offer
electives like public speaking and creative writing, drama, broadcast
journalism, KJLS video production support, music sectionals and
accompanists, and an additional section of JLS's popular industrial
technology program. PiE dollars mean that JLS can maintain or increase
popular electives to help kids find their interests in middle school.
-
Student Guidance — Donations to PiE help fund student
support activities,
including funding Panther Camp for all incoming students, paying for JLS's
new 7th and 8th grade transitional one-day programs, and paying for vital
additional counselor time. PiE dollars have made it possible for JLS to have
one dedicated counselor for each grade, who move with their cohorts through
all three years at JLS, allowing for deeper knowledge of kids and swifter
response to problems.
-
Writing and Technology — PiE gifts are supporting the
development of a
universal, systematic practice for teaching writing throughout the
curriculum at JLS. PiE also pays for technology-related staffing, including
the school's technology mentor for teachers and technology lead, Karin
Forssell. Karin leverages the technology plan and manages district
donations to ensure that the right technology goes into classrooms where it
can be best used to maximize teaching and learning.
