Our Programs
JLS Middle School

At JLS, PiE funds help create a more caring environment for kids and
help kids find their interests and "hook into" school. Specifically, during 2011-12,
thanks to the generous support of parents and community members, PiE has donated
$233,529 to JLS which is used to:
Additional Electives.
- PiE dollars makes it possible for JLS to offer
electives like public speaking and creative writing, along with drama, broadcast journalism,
video production support and music. PiE dollars mean that JLS can maintain popular electives
while other districts are slashing them.
Student Support.
- PiE dollars help fund student support activities, including funding Panther Camp for all
incoming students, participating in the Challenge Success program to help train teachers on social and
emotional issues, and paying for additional counselor time. PiE dollars have made it
possible for JLS to have one dedicated counselor for each grade, who move with their cohorts
through all three years at JLS, allowing for deeper knowledge of kids and swifter response
to problems.
Technology.
- PiE dollars support technology-related staffing, including paying for the school’s
technology mentor for teachers and technology lead. PiE dollars pay 100% of Karin
Fossell’s salary, and Karin leverages the technology plan and manages district
donations to ensure that the right technology goes into classrooms where it is
needed and can be best used. Karin and JLS’s other technology mentor James Sperry
also work with teachers to ensure that JLS teachers use technology effectively,
maximizing their teaching and learning time.
“JLS benefits tremendously from PiE contributions, especially in these
times of budget uncertainty. With PiE dollars, JLS is able to maintain a vast
selection of elective choices, support the social-emotional well being of our
students, and facilitate the use of technology in the schoolroom. Thank you for your
gift to PiE.”
- JLS Principal Sharon Ofek
Your 2011-12 PiE chairs are Jennifer Mutz and Lisa Steinback.
